| Caring for our Coast Stage 2 |
|
This is an extension of the original two year “Coastal Community Engagement, Stage1” project 2009 - 2011 Caring for Our Country Competative project. It was developed and carried out by the five coastal CMAs (Sydney Metropolitan, Hawkesbury-Nepean, Southern Rivers, Hunter-Central Rivers and Northern Rivers). It is led by Northern Rivers CMA and involves on-ground works and community engagement in the coastal zone.
Within the SMCMA area there are four small-scale projects from the original Expression of Interest process of Stage 1 (these are devolved grant programs for community groups) to do restoration and conservation works in coastal and estuarine environments.
These projects are:
1) Restoration and protection of coastal reserves of Cronulla peninsula at Darook Park and Hungry Point;
2) Restoration and protection of coastal reserves of Lilli Pilli.
Both these projects will enhance Coastal Littoral Rainforest which is an Endangered Ecological community (EEC);
3) Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub restoration at Eastlake Golf Course – Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub is also an EEC;
4) Warriewood Wetlands Bushcare support project – where the main EEC is “Sydney Freshwater Wetland and Swamp Sclerophyll Forestt and numerous waterbirds reside and breed.
In addition to these, there are three bitou bush-focussed projects.
Bitou bush is a Weed of National Significance (WoNS).
Priority areas were targeted through the “Bitou Bush Threat Abatement Plan” and The three bitou projects are: 1) Randwick City Council Bitou Bush Control Project (Bunnerong Road and Fishermans Road landfill sites);
2) Restoration and Protection of Kurnell Dune Forest, Charlottle Breen Reserve;
3) Long Reef Bitou Bush Control.
Works are underway on all projects and proceeding well.
