This event ties in well with this year's National Water Week theme, which is 'Healthy Catchments, Health Communities'.
The SMCMA was a partner in this project and congratulates Sydney Water, Canterbury City Council and the Cooks River community on the completion of this new wetland for Sydney.
Funding was provided form the Australian Government's Water for our Future Initiative.
The wetland was developed as part of long-term plans to improve the water quality of the Cooks River.
Stormwater will be filtered through the wetland which will also act as habitat for wildlife.
It is anticipated the wetland will remove some five tonnes of sediment, 130 kilograms of nitrogen and 40kgs of phosphorus from the waterway each year.
